Eldritch Horror

"Eldritch Horror is a cooperative game. All players are on the same team and win or lose the game together. The investigators’ ultimate goal is to banish the Ancient One from this world by solving Mysteries. In addition, investigators need to deal with many threats and crises facing the world. These appear in the form of Gates (which spawn Monsters and can awaken the Ancient One) and Rumor Mythos cards (which harm investigators and can end the game prematurely)." [1]

Lead Investigator Buff

Lead Investigator usually gets screwed, so they should have some sort of buff as compensation. Suggestions: Blessed?

Mythos Cards

  • Blue cards: rumors (ongoing) - clue/rumor
  • Yellow cards: events - omen/reckoning/portal
  • Green cards: events and ongoing - omen/monster_surge/clues

Evil Cards

  • White Ship - blue card - at rumor end SPAWN ALL GATES!

For those that wish to write their own coded messages, but are confused by any of the steps above, I thought I'd give a description of the process:

To encode a message:

Step 1: For each word of the message, move the vowels so that they follow the consonants. Keep the order of both sets of letters as they were in the original word. The vowels for this are 'a', 'e', 'i', 'o', 'u' and 'y'.

Step 2: Remove all spaces and punctuation from the message.

Step 3: Depending on the season, employ one of the following substitution ciphers (the letter of the top row become the matching letter in the appropriate row):

Plain:  A B C D E F G H I J K L M N O P Q R S T U V W X Y Z
Spring: B H I G J D K L M N O P Q C E R S F A T U V W X Y Z
Summer: B F G H E I J K C L M N O P Q R S T U D V W A X Y Z

For fast encoding, you can use this page or this page by using decipher (the EH code is in reverse to the usual method) with the following keywords:

Step 4: Apply the following Masonic Cipher to the encrypted text by matching the appropriate letter to its symbol (original image sourced from Wikipedia):


And there you are, you have the Eldritch Horror code for your text. Incidentally, this font seems to be a good match to the one used in the rulebook (I guess you could just take the font out of the PDF if you know how too).

To decode a message:

Step 3: Add a space after every string of vowels (remember, 'y' is a vowel here)

Step 4: Figure out the words by moving the vowels back into the appropriate spots. Remember that the vowels and consonants are still in their original order. It is possible that some short words made of all vowels may need extra spaces inserted.

Step 5: Add appropriate punctuation.

And just to test anyone who wants a go, here's a message I created myself. Note that you probably want to check where I live when decoding this:

Edit: Also, when decoding the above message use equinox/solstice dates rather than full months for the season. I sort of forgot it was already December...

Edit 2: I just added the fast methods for encode and decode and changed the website to one that does both directions for ease of use.
